ABOUT
STEVE PUTNAM
Model Maker | Artist | Designer
Steve is a multi-disciplined artist, specialising in display design for retail and miniature art.
Born and raised in Surrey, his childhood was spent endlessly making models from everyday household objects, from puppet theatres to Viking ships, his imagination and inquisitive nature fascinated by minute detail and construction.
Steve's passion for model making and miniatures was heightened at the age of 12 when his Grandfather, also a keen model maker, made a 1:12 scale Victorian shop and he was immediately transfixed by this tiny world and started making accurate scale miniatures to fill the shop. Even at such a young age his work was being admired by a wider audience, he was approached by local miniature shops and asked if he could supply them with pieces to display and sell.
Studying Fine Art and later furthering his education with a BA (Hons) in Garden Design and Horticulture, Steve worked for several years as a landscape designer, winning two Silver Gilt medals at the prestigious RHS Chelsea Flower Show.
Privileged to have met Her Royal Highness Queen Elizabeth II and other member of the Royal Family along with TV coverage of the garden made this experience a highlight in his career.
Steve's work also includes set and display design for retail, exhibitions and events. With over 20 years experience in design, model making, interior and exterior design, the use of models and dioramas are an invaluable tool to show clients when presenting a scheme.
His highly detailed architectural replicas and fictional designs have been commissioned by architects, landscape designers and private collectors worldwide.
Published in numerous articles, his work has been received with
huge popularity.
With a wealth of artistic skills from design, carpentry, sculpture, and painting, Steve has realised his childhood passion for design, model making and attention to detail in successful career.
I was thrilled to chat with Darren from D.Thomas miniatures as part of his 'Meet the Miniaturist' series. We discuss my passion for the miniatures from a very early age, how my creativity has shaped my career over the years and I give Darren a tour of my Dutch cabinet house which has been 11 years in the making!
